On March 20, 2026, Formosa Taffeta Co., Ltd. held the "World's First eSMORE-TEXR Nylon Electrospinning Technology Launch Ceremony," officiated by President Ming-Chang Lee, formally announcing a major breakthrough in high-performance textiles and sustainable processing technologies. This technology integrates nanofiber materials with electrospinning processes, successfully developing a 100% nylon mono-material fabric with moisture permeability, waterproofness, and breathability. It not only represents a significant achievement in corporate technological innovation, but also opens a new direction for the global development of functional textiles.
With the continuous growth of the global outdoor and functional apparel market, and increasing emphasis by brands on sustainable materials and the circular economy, high-performance textile materials have become a key area of technological competition in the global textile industry. Formosa Taffeta stated that the launch of eSMORE-TEXR electrospinning technology will help drive the next generation of functional textiles toward high performance, low carbon emissions, and recyclability.
Formosa Taffeta noted that this innovative R&D project originated during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite global uncertainty across industries, the company's R&D center continued to evaluate new materials and processing technologies worldwide, ultimately deciding to invest in electrospinning nanofiber technology and focus on developing mono-material nylon fabrics with moisture permeability, waterproofness, and breathability, aiming to establish a new material platform for the high-performance outdoor textile market.
President Ming-Chang Lee stated:
"The official launch of eSMORE-TEXR electrospinning technology not only represents a major breakthrough in our process and material innovation, but also marks a new stage for Formosa Taffeta in the development of high-performance textiles and sustainable materials."
This technology has been developed in collaboration with the Taiwan Textile Research Institute since 2021, and was carried out under the Ministry of Economic Affairs' A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Program. The total R&D investment reached NT$243 million, with NT$97.31 million in government subsidies, making it one of the most representative projects among textile-sector participants in recent A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Programs.
President Ming-Chang Lee further stated:
"The core value of eSMORE-TEXR lies in integrating a 100% nylon mono-material structure with environmentally friendly processing technologies. This enables high-performance functional textiles with moisture permeability, waterproofness, and breathability, while also allowing post-consumer textile recycling and reuse, providing a new material solution for the textile industry to move toward a circular economy."
In terms of processing technologies, Formosa Taffeta has advanced beyond traditional lamination methods by introducing a specialized energy-saving process that directly forms a nanofiber membrane layer on the fabric surface. This shortens the production process, reduces energy consumption, lowers carbon emissions, and enhances both production efficiency and sustainability.
In addition, the technology adopts a fluorine-free material system and environmentally friendly processes, replacing conventional organic solvents such as DMF, DMAc, and toluene with alcohol-based alternatives. This further improves production safety and reduces environmental impact, making the overall process more eco-friendly and aligned with the future direction of sustainable textile development.
Currently, the R&D team has completed the development of three major functional product series, including:
Downproof fabrics with waterproof and air permeability
Featuring water repellency, moisture permeability, waterproofness, and breathability, while maintaining a soft handfeel and elasticity, suitable for high-end down jackets and outdoor functional apparel.
Softshell fabrics with windproof and thermal insulation performance
Through structural design of outer and inner fabrics, providing a comfortable and substantial handfeel with excellent windproof and thermal performance.
Three-layer (3L) fabrics with waterproof, moisture and air permeability
Achieving performance levels of moisture permeability above 10,000 g/m2*24hr, water resistance above 7,000 mmH2O, and air permeability above 0.5 CFM, effectively addressing the common issues of heat buildup and poor breathability found in conventional PU waterproof breathable fabrics.
In terms of market development, Formosa Taffeta has already engaged in material testing and technical exchanges with multiple international outdoor and functional apparel brands, demonstrating strong potential for eSMORE-TEXR electrospinning materials in the global functional textile market.
Formosa Taffeta further stated that it established an electrospinning R&D laboratory in Q3 2025, and completed the construction of the Phase One electrospinning production facility in Q4 2025. The production line equipment was designed and manufactured with the participation of the company's team, incorporating intelligent monitoring systems, cleanroom-grade facilities, and temperature and humidity control systems to ensure stable production conditions and consistent product quality.
President Ming-Chang Lee concluded:
"Looking ahead, Formosa Taffeta will continue to deepen its R&D efforts in high-performance textile materials, integrate innovative technologies with sustainability principles, expand applications across functional textiles, and drive the continued development of Taiwan's textile technology in the global market, thereby enhancing the international competitiveness of Taiwan's functional textile industry."
